Power and Peril this Thursday 22 October
Advance tickets still available
October is flying by, and autumn is well and truly here with falling leaves, darkening evenings and of course Chandos Chamber Choir's concert this week. We do hope you will join us for an exciting programme of works commemorating colourful leaders from history, religion and literature - book now to reserve your place and snap up an early bird ticket whilst they last.
Across five centuries of choral music, we encounter kings and queens, rulers and rebels, conflicted heroes and tyrants — and some of the dark consequences of their decisions. Some of tonight's composers such as John Dowland, Thomas Weelkes and Orlando Gibbons wrote for a world in which monarchy, faith and political power were closely intertwined. Thomas Tomkins’s deeply moving When David Heard gives voice to a ruler overwhelmed by the death of his son Absalom, and Eric Whitacre’s much larger setting of the same biblical episode forms the emotional centre of tonight’s programme.
David Mourning the Death of Absolom by Gustave Doré
Join us on Thursday for this unforgettable programme.
